At-Home Dental Care – Oral Surgery Recovery Tips

Wisdom tooth extraction, gum surgery, jaw bone grafting, and procedures to correct structural defects are generally performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. If you’re scheduled for oral surgery, you probably just want it to be over, but your actions during the recovery period are important for helping you avoid complications and keeping you as comfortable as possible while your body heals itself. The following tips can help.

Oral Surgery Recovery: The Do’s

  • For the first few days after surgery, stick to soft foods such as yogurt, milkshakes, smoothies, soups, and mashed potatoes.
  • Make sure to rest on the day of your surgery. And, to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding and swelling, keep your head propped up with pillows.
  • Applying ice packs intermittently for 15 minutes at a time will help to reduce swelling.
  • If your oral surgeon does not provide prescription pain medications, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers to ease your discomfort. However, make sure to stay away from products containing aspirin as these can increase bleeding. Take medications immediately after surgery to prevent pain before it occurs.
  • Make yours a healthy, balanced diet. Foods rich in vitamins C and A support your body’s natural healing process.
  • After the first 24 hours, you should be gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water. Do this four times per day and after meals and snacks. If you are given a prescription mouth rinse, use it as directed.
  • If your doctor prescribes antibiotics, be sure to take every dose until the course is finished. Never stop taking them because you feel better.
  • Obtain contact information for an affordable dentist who is available on weekends in case you need immediate advice or dental care.

Oral Surgery Recovery: The Don’ts

  • Don’t overexert yourself.
  • Don’t smoke or use a straw; the sucking motions can dislodge blood clots that form as part of the healing process.
  • Never consume hot foods or drinks while your mouth is numb.
  • Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours after your surgery.
  • Don’t eat hard, crunchy or chewy foods.
  • Avoid brushing teeth near the incision site until you are instructed to do so.

How to Know when to Seek Emergency Dental Care

If you experience fever, excessive blood loss, severe swelling, or intolerable pain, see your oral surgeon immediately. If you cannot reach your surgeon, contact an affordable dentist or an emergency dental care clinic for advice.
